Did you know that gas heaters need servicing every 12-24 months?
A service includes:
Checking overall performance
Assessing the thermostat, heat exchanger, gas pressure and flue
Gas heating keeps most Melbourne homes warm through winter. But a gas heater that has not been serviced loses efficiency, is more likely to break down on the coldest night of the year, and in the worst case can leak carbon monoxide into your home.
Gaschill’s licensed gasfitters provide gas heater service in Melbourne for ducted gas heating and gas space heaters, across Bayside and the Mornington Peninsula. Every service includes a carbon monoxide test, so you know your heater is safe to use. We are an authorised Rinnai dealer with more than 11 years and 6,000+ installations and services behind us, and we bring the same care to a routine service as to a full installation.
(CO) is a colourless, odourless gas. You cannot see it or smell it, and exposure can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and, in serious cases, death.
A gas heater with a cracked heat exchanger, a blocked flue or poor ventilation can release carbon monoxide into your living space. Energy Safe Victoria also warns that open-flued gas heaters can spill exhaust gases back into the room when exhaust fans or rangehoods are running, particularly in well-sealed homes.
That is why we test for carbon monoxide and spillage on every gas heater service. Energy Safe Victoria recommends having gas heaters serviced by a qualified gasfitter at least every two years.
If you suspect a carbon monoxide leak, turn the heater off, open doors and windows, and get everyone outside. Seek medical help if anyone feels unwell. If you smell gas, call the gas emergency line on 132 771.
Do not use the heater again until it has been checked.
Our gas heater service follows the manufacturer’s service guidelines for your heater. A standard service includes:
For ducted gas heating we also inspect the return-air grille and filter, check the ducting in the roof space for damage, gaps and disconnections, and measure airflow and temperature at the outlets.
Ducted gas heating is the most common central heating in Melbourne homes. Because the heater sits in the roof space or outside, problems can go unnoticed for years while running costs creep up.
Our ducted heating service covers the heater unit, burners, heat exchanger, fan, filter, flue and controller, plus a check of the ducting for leaks that waste heat and money. Most ducted heater manufacturers recommend a service at least every two years. Thinking of upgrading instead? See our ducted gas heating options.
Wall-mounted, floor-standing and convector gas heaters are common in older Melbourne homes and units, along with gas wall furnaces. We service them all.
Older open-flued heaters need particular attention. They draw air from inside the room and send exhaust up a flue, so they are the type most likely to spill carbon monoxide if something goes wrong. If yours is more than 10 years old, we recommend a yearly service.
Energy Safe Victoria recommends a service at least every two years. As a guide:
Regular gas heater maintenance also keeps your heater running efficiently, which helps keep winter gas bills down.
Under Victoria’s Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021, rental providers must have a gas safety check carried out on all gas appliances, fittings and connections at least every two years by a licensed or registered gasfitter.
We can complete the gas safety check and service in one visit and give you a report for your records. Property managers can book several properties with one call.
If your heater is safe and in good condition, a service is all it needs. If we find a fault, we explain it and quote the gas heater repair before doing any extra work.
Sometimes a repair is not worth it. If your heater is more than 15 years old, has a cracked heat exchanger, or keeps breaking down, replacing it is usually the smarter choice.
Many Melbourne homeowners are now switching from gas to an efficient reverse-cycle split system or reverse-cycle ducted system which heats in winter and cools in summer. If you replace a gas heater with an eligible system, you may qualify for $1,500 to $5,000 in Victorian Energy Upgrades rebates, and we handle the paperwork. Still deciding? Read our comparison of a gas heater vs a split system. We will give you honest advice either way.

Gaschill gas space heater services start from $275, and ducted gas heating services start from $275. A second heater serviced in the same visit is from $375. Every service includes a carbon monoxide test, and we confirm your price before we book you in.
Energy Safe Victoria recommends having gas heaters serviced at least every two years. We recommend a yearly service for heaters over 10 years old, open-flued heaters, and heaters that run every day through winter. Book in autumn to beat the winter rush.
Every Gaschill gas heater service includes a carbon monoxide and spillage test, a heat exchanger inspection, a gas pressure test, a clean of the burner, pilot, fan and filters, a flue and ventilation check, a test of the thermostat and safety devices, and a full operating test. For ducted systems we also check the return-air filter and the ducting in the roof space.
Checking overall performance
It is recommended that gas heaters are serviced once every two years or between 12-24 months depending on how heavily it’s been used.
Gas heaters need regular service and maintenance to ensure they are running effectively and safely.
Regular servicing will prevent heaters from malfunctioning or breaking down easily. It will also ensure that your heater is heating efficiently (with minimal waste) helping you save on energy bills. The carbon monoxide check that is done during the service is to make certain there are no dangerous gases leaking into your home.
Allow about 45 to 60 minutes for a gas space heater and 60 to 90 minutes for ducted gas heating. We give you a time estimate when you book.
If it is safe and working well, service it. If it is more than 15 years old, fails the carbon monoxide test or needs an expensive part, compare the repair cost with switching to a reverse-cycle system, which may attract $1,500 to $5,000 in VEEC rebates. We will give you honest numbers for both.

They recently installed a heat pump water heater for me and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. I spent time researching both price and model, and this company offered the best option. After finalizing my rebate application, they were able to replace my old water heater within just two days, which was much faster than what I had read in reviews about other companies where customers waited much longer. The installation was smooth, the workmanship was excellent, and the team was friendly and professional throughout the process. Highly recommended!

The team at Gaschill are amazing to work with! From my initial enquiry with Tee about air conditioning, he provided excellent customer service explaining what would best suit our needs and responding promptly to all our emails.
Liam, Jack, and Brandon did an incredible job installing our multihead split system a few days ago. They arrived on time, were polite, thorough, and worked efficiently. They even cleaned up all the mess after finishing the job! You can really see how experienced and dedicated they are in what they do.
I would highly recommend Gaschill to anyone looking to install a split system for heating or cooling. Fantastic service from start to finish, thank you guys! My dad is a very happy man!
