There are some common misconceptions of heating systems that you’ll need to be aware of before deciding on the best heating solution for your home. You’d be surprised how widespread some of these claims are.

In this blog, we’re uncovering 3 common myths around heating to ensure that you make better choices when it comes to keeping warm this winter.

Myth 1: Gas Heaters Are Cheaper To Run vs. Air Conditioners

A common belief many people have is that gas heaters are cheaper to run than air conditioners when actually, the opposite is true. Gas heaters might cost less to buy and install but air conditioners ultimately save you more money in the long run.

The reason most people assume that gas heaters cost less to run is because gas prices are generally lower than the cost of electricity. However, air conditioners work by taking outside from the outside to heat a particular room or space while gas heaters will have to create energy by burning gas fuel. Creating energy is a lot less energy-efficient than using what’s already there.

Running costs would also depend on what type of gas heater and air conditioner you’re using i.e. ducted and single unit air conditioner or flued and unflued gas heaters. However, generally air conditioners tend to be more cost efficient compared to gas heaters.

Below we compare some of the costs involved.

Myth 2. If My Air Conditioner Is Working Fine For Cooling, It’ll Work Fine For Heating

Just because your air conditioner is working fine when in cooling mode does not mean it will do the same when you switch to heating. There’s a couple reasons for this – ice building up in the unit during colder months, faulty parts, clogged air filters and coils, among others.

Air conditioners are just like cars – they’ll need to be serviced and maintained regularly. Skipping out on servicing your air conditioner could cause your air conditioner to work less efficiently and cause you more money in the long run.

Winter will bring an extreme change in temperature which can affect how well your air conditioning unit functions. We recommend taking steps to prepare your air conditioner for winter to ensure you don’t encounter a sudden issue in the middle of winter.

Myth 3: Hot Water Heat Pumps Cost Too Much

Heating isn’t just confined to air heating. Hot water plays an important part in our daily lives. You may have heard of gas and electric heaters but a newer, more efficient system is hot water heat pumps.

It’s true that the upfront costs of heat pumps are on the pricey side but over the long run, they end up costing less than other heating solutions. If you’re getting a heat pump for a 4-person household, you’ll require a 270–315L tank. This could cost anywhere between $2500 to $4000 (excluding installation fee).

However, over time you’ll learn that the running costs of a heat pump system would be more affordable compared to conventional heating systems.

While this depends on the size and capacity of the heat pump you choose, it would generally cost you $185 per year. Although the upfront costs of installing the heat pump may be more expensive than a conventional heating system, its lower running costs make it the more practical option in the long run.

Heat pump owners can also see their system pay for itself within 5-10 years, saving thousands over its average 15-year lifespan.

To Sum Up

It can be tricky to know the difference between fact and myth as some myths are so widespread. It would take a fair bit of research and time for the average person to distinguish between what is real and what isn’t.
